Purcell, Haydn and Fauré
‘Thou knowest Lord the Secrets of Our Hearts’ by Purcell is distinguished by its quiet, restrained opening, moving chordal style, and intense, emotional plea for mercy at the end of life. ‘O Sing unto the Lord’ is a verse anthem for Bass solo and chorus, and shows Purcell at his most Italianate.
Haydn’s Missa Brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo is better known as the “Little Organ Mass”. Haydn used a technique of scoring all four voice parts singing different words at the same time. It makes for a shorter Mass than usual, and a joyous one! It includes a beautiful setting of the Benedictus for solo soprano.
Finally, we perform Fauré’s wonderful Requiem. Who can forget the first time they experienced hearing this extraordinary, spiritual work? It is a privilege for the choir to sing it, and to be accompanied by Nigel Brown, the renowned organist from Long Melford.
